Dessert recs

in kennedy town

Jessie Larbi

Literally nothing screams unadulterated love like dessert does, and what’s even better is if it’s affordable and in close reach. Kennedy Town is home to numerous dessert hangouts, ranging from western to traditional Chinese sweet delights. After visiting and testing out a few of these place, we suggest checking these spots when you’re craving a sugary getaway.

Upon stepping into spicebox, you’re hit with swivelling traces of cinnamon reeling you in to get their Banana Cacao nibs or even a bite sample of their pumpkin muffin. With pleasant smiles from the staff there, they receive every customer with grace. The head waitress never misses to inform customers about their most popular item on the menu, which is their raw blueberry cheesecake. This creamy delicacy that melts gradually as its ravishes one’s mouth palates should be a must have dish from their menu.

Spice box is an organic spice store for vegetarian fans out there scavenging for their chia seeds, lentils, cashew milk and just all the necessities for a vegetarian friendly meal or sweet. Regardless of their prominently limiting space for customers to linger around and enjoy their raw carrot cheesecake or a gluten-free ladoos, they have made it possible for customers to scurry upstairs and lounge on their tabriz rugs for which can only have two customers at a time.

Sweet Dreamer dessert

Probably one of the most bustling dessert spots in Kennedy town, serving us local desserts that one could only long for from a dessert place in Hong Kong. Not your typical local dessert hangout with minimal regard for aesthetics, instead this one went the extra mile to having an open kitchen. A transparent glass separating the culinary dessert chefs from the customers, with tungsten lights gleaming down on your mango sago and post-it notes adorning the glass slates to show solidarity for the protesters.

They had this dish called coconut taro, consisting of taro balls, yam balls, rice balls, sago and red beans encompassed by a sea of coconut milk. It is one of their highly recommended bowls of desserts from their menu. A few notable mentions would be their unicorn shaped ice cream desserts, it might just be matcha custard and a waffle corn but could be “instagramable”.

Ho Yin Kee ( 何賢記甜品世家 )

Tucked away in the far corner from exit C of Kennedy town on the left, it sticks out like a sore thumb away from the bar scene. Run by an adorable old lady, who absent-mindedly forgets the presence of customers rushing in and out for their takeaway orders. Eventually, upon acknowledging our presence and with our minimal Cantonese vocabulary, we settled on Coconut Milk Gum Tragacanth with taro balls from one of the many pictured desserts plastered on the walls.

Ho Yin Kee does provide a slightly authentic experience for dessert eaters that hope to become partially immersed in the Hong Kong culture, but with the possibility of English translations of the desserts offered on the menu.

Blueberry muffin, wild berry muffin, cha latte, carrot cake and banana cake, not to mention the serene ocean view from your seat as you munch on your baked goods. A tiny hipster café/pastry place is so perfectly camouflaged in its hole that if one wasn’t looking carefully it would be completely overlooked.

Usually carrot cakes could go either ways, but we highly suggest testing this one out. Coated with cinnamon cream cheese, and probably along with their chocolate mocha, then grab one of their three foldable chairs for a cosy time!

This place might be a bit tight to fit a bunch of friends, but would be perfect for a quick morning coffee or a brunch date!

Price: $ (an alternative to Starbucks if you’re looking to support a small business)

Time: 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
